by the New Yorker

The following article presents us with the following facts and/or ideas: Obama’s agenda on the Iraq war was to bring back one combat brigade per month and devote more attention to Afghanistan. The article states that Obama has not made any more clear comments since the situation in Iraq has improved. The article implies that Obama might have changed his view toward Iraq and will flip flop like he did with his campaign finance. The article expands on the situation on Iraq and the risks of leaving Iraq to soon (5 years old war).

The Iraq war according to Wikipedia

An ongoing conflict, which has been termed as the Iraq War, “Gulf War II”, or the “Second Persian Gulf War”, Began on March 20, 2003 with the United States-led invasion of Iraq by a multinational coalition composed of U.S. and U.K. troops supported by smaller contingents from Australia, Denmark, Poland, and other nations.

In some circles, the conflict is referred to as “Operation Iraqi Liberation” or “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” At the start of the war, U.S. official argued that Iraq and its alledged possession and further pursuit of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed an imminent threat to the security and interests of the United States, Europe and the other nations of the Middle East. Although some earlier degraded remnants of misplaced or abandoned WMD were found, they were not the weapons for which the coalition invaded. Some U.S. officials accussed Hussein of harboring and supportinig Al-Qaeda but no evidence of any collaborative relationship has been found. Other reasons for the invasion included support for Palestinians suicide bombers, Iraq human rights abuses and spreading democracy. Continue Wikipedia’s Iraq War definition here.

MCCAIN’S ECONOMIC PLAN

30 06 2008

McCain has an unpopular president on his side. He is also a republican. Republican are not well liked within the poor communities. Therefore, these are the two main obstacles that John McCain has to overcome in order to obtain the backing of the middle to lower caste.

The following are his economic policies to improve the economy and people’s standard of living in America.

  • On the Gasoline prices: John McCain calls for suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He proposes to stop filling US oil reserves, stop subsidizing Ethanol, cut tariffs and sugar quotes.
  • On the Housing crisis: John McCain proposes a manageable loan for those DESERVING American families or homeowners to trade a burdensome mortgage. This loan is going to be only available for homeowners with trouble paying their primary home mortgage. He also calls for the formation of a Justice Department Mortgage Abuse Task Force.
  • On Taxes: McCain wants to cut taxes for the middle classes by repealing the Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT). He states that this will save middle class families approximately $2,700  dollars a year. He also states that he will double the dependents exemption. This will raise the personal exemption for each dependent from $3,500 to $7,000. He will introduce policies to make it harder for tax increases. He will reduce the Federal Corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent. Furthermore, he plans to offer tax credit equal to 10% of wages spent on R&D.
  • On Retirement: McCain will enact lower medicare premiums. He will abolish complicated taxes and adapt a more simpler tax system.

These are the policies of John McCain on the economy. It is not hard to see  that McCain wants lower taxes for everyone. It is a great idea. However, it is imperative to understand that taxes are the driven force to maintain an economy flowing.

Taxes pay for highways, schools, debts, wars, police, fire departments, jails, aid to poor people, health insurance, retirement and many other things that are necessary in our everyday lives. Thus, these policies should lead us to the following questions: How is the US going to pay for its increasing debt, for Medicaid, and for its people retirements? If the government is struggling to help those in the mortgage crisis now, how it will help in future crisis when it will not have funds available.

These policies will only work if the private sector is willing to help in future crisis. Nevertheless, history has dictated that the private sector is usually very unlikely to help in economic crisis. These policies, therefore, look very much like Bush’s policies.

OBAMA’S PLAN TO FIGHT POVERTY

27 06 2008

The poverty level in the US is rising everyday. You can attribute it to the economy. But, one important player was President Bush. Bush did all within his power to enrich wealthy Americans a little bit more the past eight years. On the other hand, he totally forgot about poor Americans in general (Blacks, Hispanics and Whites). Therefore, Obama is proclaiming the need for a change in Washington.

Obama plans to improve poverty by implementing the following proposals:

He plans to expand access to jobs through the creation of a Green Job Corps. The Green Job Corps entails the engagement of disadvantage youth in energy efficiency opportunities. He also wants to help American grab a hold of and climb the job ladder. He plans to attain this by investing a billion dollar over five years in transitional jobs and career pathways. Moreover, he wants to improve transportation access to jobs and reduce crime recidivism by providing ex-offender supports.

Other Obama’s plans are:

  • Expand the earned income tax credit.
  • Create a living wage.
  • Provide tax relief for seniors making under $50.000 per year and provide to all low and middle-income workers a $500 pay tax credit.
  • Promote responsible fatherhood.
  • Support parents with young children by expanding the highly successful Nurse-Family partnership.
  • Expand paid sick days.
  • Create an affordable housing trust fund.
  • Fully fund the community development block grant. This will increase resources to the highest-need Americans.
  • Extablish 20 promise neighborhoods.
  • Ensure community based investment resources in every urban community.
  • Invest in rural areas.

THIS IS WHAT OBAMA MUST OVERCOME!

26 06 2008

Obama must overcome a 34 electoral vote margin to win the 2008 election. This was the margin that caused Kerry to lose the 2004 election. This is a large margin to overcome. However, those states that voted for Bush in the 2004 election might have already repented. Therefore, there is no better way to redemption than voting for Obama in the upcoming election. According to CNN, Bush’s job approval rating was at 31% in March 19, 2008. Thus, this could help Obama turn those Red states into Blue states. However, it will be a very difficult task.

The following are the strategic steps that Obama will implement to try to work the magic of turning Red states into Blue states:

  • Promote voter registration
  • Help elect democrats down the ballot
  • Build grassroots organizations in every state
  • Increase television ads in the following states: Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia.
  • Encourage women to vote and choose him as their candidate
  • Keep the Hispanic advantage
  • Attract more independents
  • Turn the following key states into blue: Virginia, Missouri, Colorado, Ohio, Iowa and New Mexico. Texas is almost impossible to turn blue. Thus, it was not included.
  • Re-enforce and maintain voters enthusiasm

Important quote:

“Even among voters who say they do plan to vote for McCain, more than half say they are “not enthusiastic” about their chosen candidate. By contrast, 81% of Obama voters say they are enthusiastic about their candidate.”
